South Australia’s construction industry continues to forge forwards with purpose. Despite facing challenges such as fluctuating economic conditions, labour shortages and evolving project demands; our builders, tradespeople and industry professionals, continue to rise to the occasion – fearlessly, and with a uniquely South Australian resolve.
With the Malinauskas Labor Government’s ‘local first’ initiative, South Australian businesses now represent 91% of government procurement, with $5.18 billion in contracts awarded to local enterprises since July 1st of last year. This commitment is driving local businesses to adopt a forward-thinking mindset, shifting our focus to innovation, resourcefulness and versatility.
As a judge for the 2025 Master Builders SA Building Excellence Awards, I’ve had the unique opportunity to walk through some of this year’s most inspiring and well-executed construction projects across the State – taking me all the way to Elliston, on the the lower Eyre Peninsula. What stood out wasn’t just the quality of workmanship – though that was exceptional – but the ingenuity, creativity and sheer adaptability demonstrated by our local industry.
From complex urban construction to sensitive regional builds, South Australian builders are demonstrating bold thinking, sustainable design, and clever use of modern methods and materials. I’ve seen projects where tight timeframes and logistical challenges have been turned into case studies for collaboration. Others where emerging technologies — like offsite prefabrication, smart site management systems, or low-emission machinery — have been seamlessly integrated into traditional trades practices.
These examples aren’t the exception; they’re becoming the rule. And they’re a testament to the depth of talent and leadership we have here in our industry.
The evidence is undeniable: the construction sector in South Australia is not merely enduring the challenges posed by growing infrastructure demands, but is, in fact, thriving. We are building smarter and safer than ever before through innovation, collaboration, adaptation and versatility. And perhaps more importantly, we are building with heart, and a newfound confidence that is transforming our industry, leaving a legacy that will benefit our State for generations to come.

TC ZENITH – ARC APARTMENTS BOWDEN

TC ZENITH has hit the skies of Adelaide for the ARC Apartments at Bowden. Load 28’s fourth successful tower crane installation in just three weeks.
TC ZENITH represents more than just altitude — it symbolises the peak of technology, capability, and vision more than 18 months in the making, and showcases the strength of collaboration, through our partnership with Active Crane Hire and ZOOMLION.
Despite facing their busiest and toughest three months in the business, our TC Crew’s spirits were lifted by MD Marcus Rigney’s toolbox on site prior to the new crane’s erection. “To reach ZENITH, we rise with precision, not speed – safety is our strength, and teamwork is our lift,” Marcus said.

Our TC Crew successfully erected the Potain MCH 125 for Citify at Second Street Bowden, adding another Load 28 tower crane to Adelaide’s skyline. With more tower cranes set to be installed in the coming months, it is essential that our team maintains vigilance and effective communication throughout this period.
Effective communication is critical when working in construction. Without it, things can go pretty pear shaped quickly. Not only can poor communication cause delays, it can decrease productivity, and most importantly pose a significant safety risk on site.
But we need not worry. At Load 28, we focus on solutions for our clients. We know that every construction project is unique and comes with its own set of challenges. The good news is, our strengths lie in thinking outside the box and finding innovative answers. This is truly what sets us apart from our competitors.
In June, Load 28’s TC Crew erected a new ZOOMLION RL165 Tower Crane, in partnership with Active Crane Hire, for Forth Constructions and the Griffin Group.
But why did we choose this particular crane for this project? The Apartments are being constructed on a tight site on busy Colley Terrace in Glenelg, positioning them in Adelaide Airports flight path and within close proximity to the homes and businesses nearby. The ZOOMLION RL165’s Tower Crane allows us to operate in two modes; both flattop and luffing mode. This means we can stay under the airport high clearances, and reduce oversailing for our neighbours.
Tackling wind and rain couldn’t curb the excitement or dampen the spirits of our client, our collaborative partners, and our awesome team as we erected this beauty with safety and precision.
