IJ PROJECTS
CONTRACTOR COLLABORATION
TOWER CRANE REMOVAL

LOAD 28 NEWS

Building South Australia Together

Big things are happening in South Australia with new projects in affordable housing and infrastructure just around the corner. But there is no denying that while the construction industry is set to see vast growth over the coming years, there are some real challenges looming; including the skills shortage that impacts our ability to get key projects over the line.

It’s no secret that we can’t do it all on our own. This is where collaboration comes in; we have a better shot at success if we partner together and support each other as a united subcontractor trade base. Working side by side, we can fill the skills gap, share resources, and keep projects on track.

The benefits for South Australian subcontractors working together and combining our skills and resources is vast. It provides us with the ability to tackle some of the larger infrastructure projects that may otherwise be allocated to interstate businesses. By keeping jobs and project opportunities local, the money stays in our community, building the future for all South Australians, helping our families and supporting our local businesses.

Ensuring Early Sub Contractor Involvement (EsCI) by builders is also key. From a contractor’s perspective, if we are engaged earlier in the planning process, by way of a letter of intent, we have more time to prepare and provide the best possible solution for our clients. It allows us the ability to think outside the square, to find more cost-effective solutions, that may see us partnering with our fellow contractors. Both the builder and the contractor benefit from this pathway.

Take Load 28’s recent collaboration with Fleurieu Cranes on our valued client IJ Project’s Waymouth street project. By combining our strengths and working as one team, we executed a smooth, safe and successful tower crane removal. This is the kind of teamwork that makes a difference!

So let’s work together to build a stronger future for our State and all South Australians.

SAFETY

It’s Everyone’s Business

Load 28 Managing Director Marcus Rigney was humbled to receive a Certificate of Appreciation from the team at Sarah Constructions last month for his ongoing commitment to educating our industry during National Safe Work Month in October.

Marcus has been facilitating Sarah’s Precast Lifting Awareness workshops over the last few years, sharing his vast knowledge and insights on the importance of safety in the construction industry.

Marcus said “I truly believe collaboration is key to creating safer, more efficient work environments. When we work together, share insights, and prioritise open communication, we can identify risks early and develop solutions that protect everyone.”

“By fostering this culture, we ensure everyone on site can contribute to a safer workplace,” Marcus said.

QUEST II
The NCompass Solution

Last year Load 28 launched ‘The NCompass Solution’ – offering our clients an encompassing solution to building services on site.

Our goal was to harness all our equipment capabilities and draw on our strong project management skills to provide our clients with one service provider, one point of contact, one engineering team, one installation team and one project management team for crane hire, tower crane hire, vertical hoists and loading decks. This ensures the project is more streamlined and efficient.

We are seeing the success of this strategy at Mossop Construction’s Quest Apartment II in Port Adelaide, where we are engaged to provide:

  • Crane hire for Ramco Precast
  • Structural Steel installation for Tali Engineering
  • Hollowcore installation for Mossop Constructions
  • General Crane lifting for Mossop Constructions
  • Construction Hoists
  • Loading Decks

Our Supervisor Norm is at the helm of this project and working collaboratively with the Mossop team, driving efficiency in the project, which is reflective in the overall construction program.

Hear from Zac, one of our awesome Tower Crane Operators in the above video as he unloads a truck of gyprock to level four of the loading dock and executes a variety of other lifts on the YWCA project by Tandem Building Group.

Zac is operating our MCH 125 Potain electric luffing crane, a very efficient and smooth crane to drive.

CARRYING ON A NICK’S CRANES TRADITION

Load 28 takes pride in continuing the Nick’s Cranes tradition of constructing Adelaide City Council’s renowned Christmas Tree.

Using our 230-ton mobile crane adorned with South Australian icons, the Load 28 team safely and efficiently assembled the tree, to the delight of onlookers.

Load 28 has been erecting the tree for the past two years since acquiring Nick’s Cranes in 2022.

GIVING BACK
Bluescope Australia

Managing Director Marcus Rigney is a passionate mental health advocate in South Australia’s building and construction industry.

For ‘R U OK’ day in September, Marcus presented his ‘Do You Need a Lift’ mental health strategy to the awesome team at Bluescope Australia as part of his role as a valued Master Builders SA RISE Coach.

Customer Service Manager Fiona Rigney was also busy that day, visiting the BADGE Constructions team at the Payneham Swim Centre as part of ‘Tradie Thursday’; Load 28’s partnership with Fresh FM. The leading radio station did a live cross from the site, and Fiona spent time with the crew, connecting, and enjoying some yummy pies and pasties.

LIFTING THE BAR
To Support Our Community

Load 28’s Customer Service Manager Fiona Rigney and valued rigger and crane operator Robby Hill were excited to take part in supporting three times world record holder, Jordan ‘Biggie’ Steffans for his ‘Weight over the Bar’ challenge.

With Robbie behind the wheel of our 20ton mobile crane, and Fiona using her strong organisation and project management skills, they made a great team.

Load 28 loves taking part in events that support our local community.

RECOGNISING BUILDING EXCELLENCE
2024 Master Builders SA
Building Excellence Awards

Load 28 was proud to be the major sponsor of the Master Builders SA Building Excellence Awards this year. The event was held in August at the Adelaide Convention Centre and attended by over 1500 industry representatives.

Load 28 has been a supporter of this well recognised and respected program for the past four years, with Managing Director Marcus Rigney also a valued judge.

The evening was a proud moment for Marcus for many reasons, but the standout was watching his 19-year-old son, and Load 28 rigger, Mitchell Rigney present the award for Commercial Refurb/Redevelopment over $5M to the Partek Constructions team.

It was only 12 months on from when Mitchell suffered a traumatic brain injury after a massive impact in his wingless race car whilst racing in Darwin, ending up in a coma in the ICU. The awards night reflected the culmination of strength, resilience and tenacity that Mitchell has displayed over the past year, defeating the odds to recover.

Customer Service Manager Fiona Rigney also presented the Civil Award to Marshall & Brougham Constructions.

Marcus said “Load 28 was proud to support Master Builders SA in their recognition and celebration of their members hard work and achievements and our amazing industry.”

2024 Australian Institute
of Building Awards

Load 28 was also proud to support the AIB Professional Excellence in Building Awards as a sponsor again this year, with Managing Director Marcus Rigney taking to the helm to deliver a keynote speech during the evening’s proceedings.

“It is no easy feat to manage and lead the building and construction process, overseeing work schedules, coordinating subcontractors, determining material and

labour costs, regular reporting to clients and stakeholders, upholding safety measures, all whilst ensuring your project is running on schedule and on budget,” Marcus said.

“To have a program, such as the AIB Awards, that fosters, reinforces and recognises these industry leaders to promote best practice in construction is not only necessary, but celebrated,” he said.
